The Broad Without Walls, 2012

This was the first official exhibition presented by the Eli and Edythe Broad Museum, in April of 2012. The art works were displayed in public spaces of East Lansing before the actual museum building was completed.

in 2011, based on previous experiences curating and producing exhibits in urban spaces, I suggested this exhibition format to the Broad Museum’s founding director, Michael Rush. Later we involved MSU faculty Laura Cloud and newly-hired curator Alison Gass. We circulated an open-call around Michigan state and selected 8 proposals by Deborah Wheeler, Kate Lewis, Mandy Cano Villalobos, Margaret Parker, Maureen Nolette, Peter Lusch, Seth Ellis and Philip Brun Del Re. The works were presented during the last week of April of 2012.

In the official press release for the event, Michael Rush wrote: “This exhibition offers an expanded notion of the places where contemporary art can thrive, and will challenge viewers to consider the way meaning of both art work and place can be shifted through surprising installations in public spaces. (…) While the Broad Art Museum is primarily dedicated to showing the works of international contemporary artists, this project marks the beginning of a long term commitment to fostering dialogue between the local and global communities.
