Ações de Emergência, 2020-2022
Ações de Emergência (Emergency Actions) is a program of urban intervention presented in Joinville, in Brazil. Produced and curated independently.
the armless immigrant statue in downtown Joinville, Brazil
The Monument to Immigrants was inaugurated in March 1951 as part of the celebrations for the Centenary of Joinville. It is one of the best-known works of the German-born sculptor Fritz Alt (1902-1968). It was installed in Praça da Bandeira, downtown, close to the city hall and the central bus station. In recent years, this monument was vandalized twice. In 2017 the shotgun of one of the statues was sawn, and in 2019 the arm of the same statue disappeared. The city promised restorations, which did not happen.
With this problem in mind we put out an open call for artistic actions in August of 2020. We called for ideas for performances, interventions, social or relational art, dance, music, theater and other artistic practices that (1) do not damage the monument and (2) are responsible in times of pandemic and social distance. All actions should be presented at or around the Monument to Immigrants. We offered artists a symbolic stipend, raised through donations, to help cover the costs of their work.
In September of 2020, we announced the selection of 6 projects by local artists Nicole Leite, Francisca Silva, Luana Wilk, Marcus Carvalheiro and the N8+HP collective. We planned for the presentation of one project per week over the course of a month. Unfortunately, the pandemic got in the way as our scheduled actions coincided with the increase of covid cases in town. Actions were scheduled and cancelled twice. So far we were only able to present to projects, by Nicole Leite and Francisca Silva.
