Early sound works
sound interventions, 2006-2009
From 2006 to 2011 I experimented with sound interventions, which I executed in a few different venues. I then worked with two types of sound: laugh tracks, the type heard on comedy sitcoms, and crowd murmur, the type heard on food courts and medium to large gatherings. I was interested in the extent to which sound affects our perception of space.
For the laugh track project, I created a track composed mostly of silence, with waves of group laughter every 15 seconds; this track played on concealed speakers, within gallery and museum spaces.
For the invisible crowd project, I created a track with the continuous murmur of a crowd, and played it on concealed speakers in eerie places - such as the art museum.
In 2007, as part of a public program of urban intervention in Vitória, Brazil, I took the laugh tracks out to the streets. The image above shows Sueli and her sound bike. She offered affordable advertising services: for an hourly fee, she biked around downtown Vitória while playing the client’s track on her speakers. I hired her to play my laugh tracks for one afternoon.
